John Hasbrouck: Home

Welcome to my website, and thanks for your patience as I slowly add content.

I am an independent working musician living in Chicago. I've been playing since 1975. My primary instruments are guitar, mandolin, and banjo.

I like to listen to scratchy old 78rpm recordings. I like to invoke the name of Harry Smith.

My first solo CD of fingerstyle guitar music, "Ice Cream", was cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine as one of the "TOP CDs of 2002". It's sequel, "Some These Days", was released in 2004.

In 2006, guitarist Matt Gandurski and I formed THE NORTHSIDE SOUTHPAWS, an all-left-handed, all-resonator mandolin/guitar duo. We perform string ragtime, marches, waltzes, stomps, fiddle tunes, proto-grass, tangos, etc. In 2008 our debut CD, "Stomp Glide Wobble", was cited by Mandolin Magazine as "...one of the best mandolin CDs of the year." Our 2nd CD, "No Bread", will be released any minute now...

The Northside Southpaws have two weekly residencies:

Fridays 7:30-9:30pm, Honky Tonk BBQ, 18th St. & Racine.

Thursdays (beginning 9/30/10) 10:00pm-12:45am, The Watershed, below Pops' For Champagne @ State & Ohio.

I also have an early evening residency at 7:30pm, Thursdays at Honky Tonk BBQ with master harmonica player James Conway. We call it The James & John Show. We play country blues & ragtime with incidental celtic excursions. I bring both guitar and mando on this gig.

Gandurski and I also play lead and rhythm guitar, respectively, in THE LAWRENCE PETERS OUTFIT. This band Features Lawrence Peters and plays classic and original honky tonk. You should check us out.

In addition to these projects I teach fingerstyle guitar and ragtime mandolin. Send me an email if you'd like to study with me.

I have a degree in Graphic Design & Typography, and during the week I work at a formidable ad agency downtown.

Many of my performaces nowadays - whether solo, or with NSSP or LPO or whomever - occur at Honky Tonk BBQ at 18th & Racine in Pilsen. HTBBQ is an excellent restaurant with a beautiful bar and lots of live music. It is three blocks from my house.
