My new jazz mandolin album, DON'T WALK AWAY FROM THE STOVE, is finished and available.

I'm currently finishing up my first solo jazz mandolin album to be called DON'T WALK AWAY FROM THE STOVE. It is essentially a snapshot through my own personal lens of the traditional jazz scene in Pilsen on Chicago's lower west side. It features no fewer than 22 guest artists who are part of this scene.

Multi-instrumentalist John Hasbrouck will celebrate the release of “Dream Lucky” – a limited-edition 10” vinyl LP of original guitar music – with a Tuesday residency at The Hideout in November, during which he will perform with a different act each week.

“Dream Lucky” is John Hasbrouck’s third solo and first all-original album. Released in a limited edition of 500, the LP artwork features an original drawing by renowned artist Robert Guinan.

John Hasbrouck’s first solo album, “Ice Cream”, was cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine as one of the “Top CDs of 2002”. The Northside Southpaws’ first CD, “Stomp Glide Wobble”, was called “one of the best mandolin CDs of the year” by Mandolin Magazine (2007). Since then, his work with various ensembles and as a sideman has earned him a reputation as a top-shelf multi-instrumentalist on Chicago’s jazz and roots music scene.

I am an independent working musician living in Chicago. I've been playing since 1975. My primary instruments are mandolin, banjo and guitar.

My first solo CD of fingerstyle guitar music, "Ice Cream", was cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine as one of the "TOP CDs of 2002". It's sequel, "Some These Days", was released in 2004.

You can listen to – and download for free – tracks from my two solo CDs on this site on the MUSIC page.

In 2006, guitarist Matt Gandurski and I formed THE NORTHSIDE SOUTHPAWS, an all-left-handed, all-resonator mandolin/guitar duo. We perform old-time string ragtime, marches, waltzes, stomps, fiddle tunes, proto-grass, tangos, etc. In 2008 our debut CD, "Stomp Glide Wobble", was cited by Mandolin Magazine as " of the best mandolin CDs of the year." In the summer of 2010 we released our 2nd CD, "No Bread", which Sing Out! magazine called "...just wonderful". We think it's our best work yet.

I play banjo and mandolin in The Hat Stretchers, an old-time country trio based in Chicago. This band features Rick Sherry on vocals and guitar, and Jon Williams on fiddle.

See my LINKS page for band websites.

I teach fingerstyle guitar and ragtime mandolin. Send me an email if you'd like to study with me.

I have a degree in graphic design and typography, and during the week I work at a formidable ad agency downtown.

If you'd like more biographical info (my 70s punk band, classical studies, embarrassing photos w/bad hair, Hardscrabble, etc.) you can go to my myspace page. (Please don't send me a message through myspace because I rarely check it.) I have a Facebook page.

Thanks for reading this far. I would very much like to play for you sometime...
