John Hasbrouck: Home

December 7, 2015

UPDATE: I'm currently working on my fourth solo album to be released in 2016. It will be a jazz and roots mandolin extravaganza featuring a great variety of instruments and musicians. This is a "Hasbrouck & Friends" project which will include contributions from my four working bands — The Northside Southpaws, The Hat Stretchers, The Pilsen Hot Five, and The Space Diamonds — as well as guest appearances by members of The Fat Babies, Alice Drinks the Kool Aid, and others.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST JOHN HASBROUCK CELEBRATES SOLO LP RELEASE AT THE HIDEOUT WITH FOUR BANDS ON FOUR TUESDAYS IN NOVEMBER

Multi-instrumentalist John Hasbrouck will celebrate the release of “Dream Lucky” – a limited-edition 10” vinyl LP of original guitar music – with a Tuesday residency at The Hideout in November, during which he will perform with a different act each week.

The Northside Southpaws kick things off on Tuesday, November 4. Hasbrouck’s left-handed mandolin/guitar duo with Matt Gandurski received national attention with “Stomp Glide Wobble” in 2007. They stay busy playing ragtime and jazz at over a hundred shows a year. The late set will feature a special reunion concert by Hardscrabble, Hasbrouck’s “jugless jug band”.

On Tuesday, November 11, Hasbrouck plays mandolin with The Pilsen Hot Six, an acoustic jazz sextet specializing in Prohibition-era standards. This group recently emerged from the traditional jazz scene happening in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

On Tuesday, November 18, Hasbrouck plays fretless banjo with his old-timey band, The Hat Stretchers. Featuring Rick Sherry and Jon Williams, this trio has been playing archaic country in and around Chicago since 2012.

On the final Tuesday of his residency, November 25, Hasbrouck will play 4-string electric mandocaster with The Space Diamonds Electro-Jazz Combo, his reverb-drenched psychedelic lounge act. Also appearing will be special guests Alice Drinks the Kool Aid.

“Dream Lucky” is John Hasbrouck’s third solo and first all-original album. Released in a limited edition of 500, the LP artwork features an original drawing by renowned artist Robert Guinan.

John Hasbrouck’s first solo album, “Ice Cream”, was cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine as one of the “Top CDs of 2002”. The Northside Southpaws’ first CD, “Stomp Glide Wobble”, was called “one of the best mandolin CDs of the year” by Mandolin Magazine (2007). Since then, his work with various ensembles and as a sideman has earned him a reputation as a top-shelf multi-instrumentalist on Chicago’s jazz and roots music scene.

_________

I am an independent working musician living in Chicago. I've been playing since 1975. My primary instruments are mandolin, banjo and guitar.

My first solo CD of fingerstyle guitar music, "Ice Cream", was cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine as one of the "TOP CDs of 2002". It's sequel, "Some These Days", was released in 2004.

You can listen to – and download for free – tracks from my two solo CDs on this site on the MUSIC page.

In 2006, guitarist Matt Gandurski and I formed THE NORTHSIDE SOUTHPAWS, an all-left-handed, all-resonator mandolin/guitar duo. We perform old-time string ragtime, marches, waltzes, stomps, fiddle tunes, proto-grass, tangos, etc. In 2008 our debut CD, "Stomp Glide Wobble", was cited by Mandolin Magazine as "...one of the best mandolin CDs of the year." In the summer of 2010 we released our 2nd CD, "No Bread", which Sing Out! magazine called "...just wonderful". We think it's our best work yet.

The Northside Southpaws play Thursdays 10:00pm-12:45am, at The Watershed below Pop's For Champagne @ State & Ohio.

I play banjo and mandolin in The Hat Stretchers, an old-time country trio based in Chicago. This band features Rick Sherry on vocals and guitar, and Jon Williams on fiddle.

See my LINKS page for band websites.

I teach fingerstyle guitar and ragtime mandolin. Send me an email if you'd like to study with me.

I have a degree in graphic design and typography, and during the week I work at a formidable ad agency downtown.

If you'd like more biographical info (my 70s punk band, classical studies, embarrassing photos w/bad hair, Hardscrabble, etc.) you can go to my myspace page. (Please don't send me a message through myspace because I rarely check it.) I have a Facebook page.

Thanks for reading this far. I would very much like to play for you sometime...
